Starwood Hotels Data Breach

The alleged data breach occurred between November 7, 2014 and October 23, 2015. Starwood stated that the hack did not affect the hotel reservation system, but those who used the restaurants and shops may be affected. Starwood also claims that the hotel loyalty program was not affected.

Fifty four hotels throughout the United States and Canada were the targets of the attacks. Affected hotels include The Westin Los Angeles Airport, W Hollywood, Palace Hotel in San Francisco, Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel, San Diego Hotel & Marina, The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa hotel in Rancho Mirage, California, and The Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California to name a few. Several other hotels throughout the United States were affected including hotels in Florida, Washington, New York, Arizona, Texas, Hawaii, New Jersey, Louisiana, North Carolina, Illinois, Alabama, Michigan and Missouri. A few hotels in Canada were also targets of the attacks.

Starwood announced that the hack was discovered when malware was found on some of the hotel’s point-of-sale systems. Starwood Hotels President Sergio Rivera posted a letter on November 20th informing consumers of the attack and stated that the hotels are working closely with law enforcement to investigate this issue. Starwood offered customers free credit monitoring for a year. Lawyers working on this case do not believe this is enough compensation for the victims of the data breach.
